Sixteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Happy Friday Everyone,

I hope your week was blessed and that this post find you well and in good spirits. As we move toward the middle of September, there is no doubt that autumn is in the air. The postage stamp has revealed itself and the weather is turning colder once again. Summer folks are returning home and things are starting to grow quieter.

As summer comes to an end, so does our summer series of looking at hymns (and chants). This Sunday, September 15th, we’ll conclude our Kingdom of God series by considering how we might make a “glad descent” back to our homes and back into the off-season (for those of us who live locally). This week, we’ll use the Taizé chant, Da Pachem Domine to guide us in our worship and prayers. The plan is to be outside this week, but if the weather is looking dodgy, we’ll move inside.

I’ve been told that the CDT hikers are still coming south and are likely to hit Lake City in seven to ten days. That means we’ll need hosts for the trail hiker center until the end of the month. Please consider signing up for a 2-hour shift on the signup sheet on the cork board in Darley. This week’s opening will be posted on Sunday.

Starting this Sunday, CPC will also be taking over the shuttling to and from Spring Creek Pass. You’ll have the opportunity to sign up for the noon shuttle this Sunday. The sign-up sheet will be posted on the corkboard in Darley.

Next Monday, September 16th, we’ll have tabletop games in the Annex/Trail Hiker Center at 7:00pm until 9:00pm. All are welcome to join us for Game Up Here.

Then, Wednesday, September 18th, we’ll gather at 5:00pm in the Annex/Trail Hiker Center for our weekly study of Christian denominations. This week, we’ll be looking at the Pentecostals (Assemblies of God, Four Square, etc.)

That’s what’s happening this coming week. Here are your Zoom links and the order of worship for Sunday’s worship service:

Fifteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Hey Everyone,

Sorry I’m posting this so late in the week. I’ll keep things short and just give you the most essentials for the week ahead.

Join us tomorrow, Sunday, September 8th for our worship service at 10:00am. With our recent hail storm, we’ll have to wait and see whether we’re in or out tomorrow. If we’re going inside, check back here for the update.

Don’t forget, if you were a Trail Hiker Center Host this summer (or you just want to join us), please join us on Sunday night, September 8th at 5:30pm for our Hiker Host Appreciation and Feedback Dinner. This year, I’ll be cooking up some Filipino fare again for you all. On the menu is Adobo Chicken, served with vegetable pancit (rice noodle dish) and steamed rice, followed by Kalami (as sweetened rice and coconut dessert).

We’ve got game this week on Monday, September 9th at 7:00pm in the Presbyterian Annex/Trail Hiker Center.

Tuesday, September 10th is the Super Souper Supper! This fundraising event will be held at the First Baptist Fellowship Hall. Bring your favorite soup and hear about what God is doing in Managua, Nicaragua at 5:00pm.

The CPC Session is meeting this Wednesday, September 11th, at 10:00pm in Darley Hall.

Join us on Wednesday, September 11th at 5:00pm in the Presbyterian Annex for our next session of the Christian Denominations series. This week we’ll be looking at the birth, development, and currently day expression of Evangelicalism.

Fourteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Hey Everyone,

Many apologies for this coming so late and with such brevity. Tomorrow morning, September 1st, we’ll gather in the CPC yard for our Sunday worship service at 10:00am. Although the hymn series is over, we’ll be looking at a few Taizé chants over the next three week as we consider what it means to embody the Kingdom of God here in Lake City.

Don’t forget that the hiker center doesn’t close until the end of September. We’ve been told there is a bubble of CDT hikers head our way in the weeks to come. Please consider signing up to host a shift at the trail hiker center this week. The signup sheet is on the cork board in Darley Hall.

There will be no Monday night games this week for Monday, September 2nd.

This Wednesday, September 4th, we’ll continue on with our Christian denomination series by exploring the roots and theology of Methodism. Join us at 5:00pm at the Trail Hiker Center/Presbyterian Annex.

Below you’ll find your links for this week as well as your order of worship for Sunday.

Thirteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Hey Everyone!

It’s that time of the week, when your wait is over… my post is finally here. 😉 It’s a cloudy Friday afternoon and as I prepare for our prayer, worship, and service gatherings this weekend, I’m mindful of all that the next few days hold.

Tomorrow night, Saturday, August 24th will be our LAST Hiker Evening Prayers (Vespers) for the season. Join us at 8:00pm in the Trail Hiker Center for a short time of sung prayers and silence. Sunday morning, August 25th will be our LAST hymn in our Summer Sermon Series: This My Story, This is Our Song. We’ll be exploring a hymn from the last century that has become more popular in recent years–A Place at the Table. Sunday’s worship service will also be the LAST Sunday with Celeste Scott leading us in worship. Although it’s not a liturgical color, we’re inviting you all to wear something orange (Celeste’s favorite color). Finally, Sunday night, August 25th will be our LAST Trail Hiker Dinner of the season. This week’s theme is GreekFest and we’ll be offering up some gyros slices on freshly baked pitas with tzatziki (a yogurt based cucumber and garlic sauce), and a hand-crafted hot sauce in the fountain. So break out your favorite Mediterranean recipes (or whatever you’d like to bring), and join us for one last amazing feast.

In other news…

Join us for games this week on Monday, August 26th at 7:00pm in the Trail Hiker Center/Presbyterian Annex.

Join us on Wednesday, August 28th at 5:00pm in the Trail Hiker Center/Presbyterian Annex for our next session on Christian denominations. This week, we’ll be exploring the roots of Baptists and Anabaptists traditions.

Finally… Calling all bakers, elves and cookie makers–we are in need of more cookies for fellowship! Consider baking a couple dozen cookies and dropping them off in the Darley Hall refrigerator.

That’s it for this week folks. Your links and the order of worship for Sunday are below.

We’re going inside!!

Hey CPC and Friends,

Despite the lack of rain in the forecast, the grass is pretty wet and it’s chilly out there this morning. Consequently, we’ll be INSIDE this morning for worship on this Sunday, August 11th. It might be a little cozy in the sanctuary, but for those of you who need a little more room, we’ll have the Presbyterian Annex/Trail Hiker Center open for overflow and we’ll be broadcasting the service via Zoom.

See you soon!

Eleventh Sunday of Ordinary Time

Hey Everyone,

I hope you’re all well and in good spirits on this sunny Friday afternoon in Lake City. The days are beginning to feel shorter and the weather cooler. It always baffles me how quickly the summer slips by. We’ve got a number of gatherings coming up, so please take a look at what’s happening this week in our common life together.

Tomorrow night, Saturday, August 10th, we’re continuing to host Hiker Evening Prayers (aka Vespers) in the Trail Hiker Center at 8:00pm. The service lasts about 30 minutes and uses the sung prayers of the Taizé Community. If you’ve ever been curious about joining us, there are only three more left.

Tomorrow night, Saturday, August 10th is also Jim Walker’s final performance of Peter the Rock at 7:30pm at Lake City Arts.

This Sunday, August 11th, is the Eleventh Sunday of Ordinary Time… how about that. ;) This week we’ll be exploring the hymn, Take My Life and Let it Be as we close out our three week focus on Stewardship. This Sunday, you’ll have the opportunity to offer your 2025 pledge to the ministry of Community Presbyterian Church. If you’d like a pledge sheet on Sunday, please select the bulletin with the pledge insert. Alternatively, you can find a downloadable file of the pledge sheet below.

On Sunday night, August 11th, we’ll welcome trail hikers to our 5th meal of the summer. Join us at 5:30pm in the Trail Hiker Center (418 Silver Street). This week we’ll be serving over 70 pounds of Cottage Pie (just like the shepherd variety with beef). Consequently, the theme for this Sunday’s meal isBritish/Irish Pub Fare.” If that’s not helpful, you can get some ideas here, here, and here. Alternatively, you can bring any side, salad, or dessert of your choosing. In the end, we don’t care what you bring, just that you’re there.

Here are your announcements for this week:

Games Up Here
Tabletop games are happening this week, Monday, August 12th at 7:00pm in the Presbyterian Annex/Trail Hiker Center. All are welcome. No experience necessary.

CPC August Session
This Wednesday, August 14th the CPC elders will meet in Darley Hall at 10:00am for our August Session meeting.

Wednesday Bible Study
This week’s Wednesday Bible Study will pick up on where we left off with the Protestant Reformation, this week turning to the Reformed traditions of the Christian faith and Presbyterianism. Join us at 5:00pm on Wednesday, August 14th in the Presbyterian Annex/Trail Hiker Center as we continue on this denominational exploration. All past sessions are located on our YouTube page which can be accessed through the worship and Bible study menu link above.

Trail Hiker Center
We’re still looking for hosts to help cover shifts for the hiker center. Please check out the cork board in Darley Hall for the most updated list of opportunities. Also, if you’re wondering what the next few weeks’ themes are for the trail hiker meals–they are… (drumroll please) August 18th the theme is “Oktoberfest” and CPC will be serving bratwursts, kraut, and brötchen (German rolls). And, August 25th (the last meal of the season) will be themed “Greek Festival” and we’ll be serving up some gyros with tzatziki and pitas.

Tenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Hey Everyone!

Happy Thursday! I hope you’re all well and looking forward to the weekend ahead. We’ve had a busy week at the Trail Hiker Center and it looks like it’s only going to get busier. We’re still looking for a few folks to fill some open shifts in the center. Come by Darley Hall or text Jason for current gaps in the host schedule.

If you haven’t joined us for our Hiker Vespers (Evening Prayer), you’ve still got four more opportunities. Utilizing the chants of Taizé, this reflective gathering offers sung prayers, read scriptures, and silence. Hiker Vespers are held in the Trail Hiker Center on Saturdays at 8:00pm.

This Sunday, August 4th, we’ll gather for the morning worship service at 10:00am in the church yard. During the service this week, we’ll be exploring the popular hymn I Surrender All, as we also consider what it means to give God our time. As usual, you can find the Zoom links and the order of worship below.

Then, on Sunday night, August 4th, at 5:30pm, we’ll gather at the Trail Hiker Center for our 5th Hiker Meal of the summer. The theme for this week is–”World Kitchen.” While we’ll be serving Butter Chicken over Basmati Rice, you can bring whatever you want. Italian, Mexican, Polish, Greek, African, European, Asian… the choice is yours. So break out your best international fare and join us for a night to remember.

We will be having games on Monday night at 7:00pm this week, but we will NOT be holding our Wednesday night Bible Study this week. We’ll return to our weekly study of Christian denominations on Wednesday, August 14th at 5:00pm. If you missed any of the previous weeks of this study, you can catch up on our YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJJFivqedFTzNeEfPpDCoXg

Last, but hardly least, our very own summer resident Jim Walker is offering God his talents as he portrays the Apostle Peter in a one-man show that the critics are hailing as, “Walker’s best performance yet!” Peter the Rock will be performed at Mary Stigall Theater, on Saturday, August 10th at 7:30pm. Through humor and drama, Walker thoughtfully presents the apostle’s strengths and weaknesses. We see Peter “the Rock” as an ordinary man who ultimately gives us hope that God can also use us all for His Kingdom.

That’s it for the announcements this week. Here are your links and stuff.

Ninth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Hey Everyone,

Happy Friday! It’s hard to believe that we’re almost half way through our hiker season, which means the hiker bubble is on its way. If you don’t know what that means, practically… we’re going to have a lot of hikers the next two weeks. With that in mind, consider how you might plug into what’s going on in the life of our community.

Hiker Evening Prayers
Tomorrow night, Saturday July 27th, we’ll gather together for our Hiker Evening Prayers in the Trail Hiker Center at 8:00pm. Our evening prayers last around 45 minutes and utilize the Chants of Taizé. It’s a great way to prepare yourself for our Lord’s Day gathering on Sunday.

Sunday Worship
This Sunday, July, 28th, we’ll hold worship outside in the yard at 10:00am. This Sunday will be a special service in the life of our church. We’ll be exploring the popular hymn–Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing. We’ll also be ordaining and installing our Class of 2027 elders, Tom Arnold and Marcia Connell. And, if that wasn’t enough, we’ll also be celebrating the Eucharist, so if you’re joining us via Zoom, please bring the communion elements to the broadcast.

We Need Cookies!
That’s right, it’s that time again. We’re having a cookie drive for our fellowship time after Sunday worship services. Consider baking a couple dozen cookies and putting them in freezer bags and placing them in the Darley Hall freezer. From this supply, we offer cookies and coffee for fellowship every Sunday.

Trail Hiker Meal
We’ll also be holding our 4th Trail Hiker Meal of the season this Sunday evening from 5:30pm until 7:00pm at the Trail Hiker Center. This week’s theme is “Breakfast” (or by extension Brunch as well). So break out your favorite first-meal-of-the-day recipes and join us for this community event. For the entree this week, we’ll be serving “breakfast dogs”–sausage links, scrambled eggs, and a special blend of cheese all delivered into your mouth via a hotdog bun. There will be something tasty (and a little spicy) in the fountain this week to amp up your breakfast dog to another level.

Monday Games
We’re playing games on Monday night, July 29th at the Trail Hiker Center at 7:00pm. Last week we had 10 hikers join us. It’s a great time to fellowship with our community and mingle with some of our hikers. No experience necessary and all are welcomed.

Wednesday Bible Study
This week’s Wednesday Bible Study will focus on the both the beginnings of the Protestant Reformation and the Lutheran tradition. Join us at 5:00pm on Wednesday, July 31st in the Presbyterian Annex/Trail Hiker Center as we continue on this denominational exploration. All past sessions are located on our YouTube page which can be accessed through the worship and Bible study menu link above.

Eighth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Hey Everyone!

Happy Friday to you all and just under the wire. 🙂 It’s been a busy week thus far and we’re going to cap it off with a bang as we look toward Sunday. I know that many of you will be involved in the PJWC yard sale tomorrow and others helping with the Stick Horse Rodeo (where I’ll be announcing tomorrow). If you’re in the park, be sure to say hello. 🙂

Then, tomorrow night, Saturday, July 20th, we’ll gather for our 8pm Hiker Evening Prayers in the Trail Hiker Center. It’s a peaceful and centering time of sung prayers, Scripture, and silence. If you’ve enjoyed singing the Taizé chants before, consider joining us, as we welcome hikers into our community.

On Sunday, July 21st, we’ll continue on with our series This is My Story, This is Our Song by exploring the powerfully moving hymn, Here I Am, Lord. We’ll also be blessed with the musical talents of our very own Bill Goodwin as he sings Amazing Grace–with Glenda Slaughter signing.

Later on Sunday, July 21st, we’ll gather at the Trail Hiker Center to host our third Trail Hiker Meal which starts at 5:30pm and concludes around 7:00pm. This week’s theme is “Italian Feast” with Grace Fellowship cooking up giant cauldrons of spaghetti in a meat sauce. The hiker population in town is about to explode, so if you’re able, please consider bringing a side dish, salad, bread, or dessert to share. And, just wait and see what I’m going to put in the fountain this week… it might be the topping of all toppings. 🙂

Next week, we’ll have our regular offerings–Monday night games at 7:00pm and our Wednesday study this week will focus on the Roman Catholic Church. The study begins at 5:00pm in the Annex.

We’re still looking for a few more shift to be covered in the Trail Hiker Center next week. If you’re able to cover one shift this week, please check out the openings on the schedule on the cork board in Darley Hall.

Here are your links and the order of worship for this Sunday.
