Ninth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Hey Everyone,

Happy Friday! It’s hard to believe that we’re almost half way through our hiker season, which means the hiker bubble is on its way. If you don’t know what that means, practically… we’re going to have a lot of hikers the next two weeks. With that in mind, consider how you might plug into what’s going on in the life of our community.

Hiker Evening Prayers
Tomorrow night, Saturday July 27th, we’ll gather together for our Hiker Evening Prayers in the Trail Hiker Center at 8:00pm. Our evening prayers last around 45 minutes and utilize the Chants of Taizé. It’s a great way to prepare yourself for our Lord’s Day gathering on Sunday.

Sunday Worship
This Sunday, July, 28th, we’ll hold worship outside in the yard at 10:00am. This Sunday will be a special service in the life of our church. We’ll be exploring the popular hymn–Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing. We’ll also be ordaining and installing our Class of 2027 elders, Tom Arnold and Marcia Connell. And, if that wasn’t enough, we’ll also be celebrating the Eucharist, so if you’re joining us via Zoom, please bring the communion elements to the broadcast.

We Need Cookies!
That’s right, it’s that time again. We’re having a cookie drive for our fellowship time after Sunday worship services. Consider baking a couple dozen cookies and putting them in freezer bags and placing them in the Darley Hall freezer. From this supply, we offer cookies and coffee for fellowship every Sunday.

Trail Hiker Meal
We’ll also be holding our 4th Trail Hiker Meal of the season this Sunday evening from 5:30pm until 7:00pm at the Trail Hiker Center. This week’s theme is “Breakfast” (or by extension Brunch as well). So break out your favorite first-meal-of-the-day recipes and join us for this community event. For the entree this week, we’ll be serving “breakfast dogs”–sausage links, scrambled eggs, and a special blend of cheese all delivered into your mouth via a hotdog bun. There will be something tasty (and a little spicy) in the fountain this week to amp up your breakfast dog to another level.

Monday Games
We’re playing games on Monday night, July 29th at the Trail Hiker Center at 7:00pm. Last week we had 10 hikers join us. It’s a great time to fellowship with our community and mingle with some of our hikers. No experience necessary and all are welcomed.

Wednesday Bible Study
This week’s Wednesday Bible Study will focus on the both the beginnings of the Protestant Reformation and the Lutheran tradition. Join us at 5:00pm on Wednesday, July 31st in the Presbyterian Annex/Trail Hiker Center as we continue on this denominational exploration. All past sessions are located on our YouTube page which can be accessed through the worship and Bible study menu link above.

Eighth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Hey Everyone!

Happy Friday to you all and just under the wire. 🙂 It’s been a busy week thus far and we’re going to cap it off with a bang as we look toward Sunday. I know that many of you will be involved in the PJWC yard sale tomorrow and others helping with the Stick Horse Rodeo (where I’ll be announcing tomorrow). If you’re in the park, be sure to say hello. 🙂

Then, tomorrow night, Saturday, July 20th, we’ll gather for our 8pm Hiker Evening Prayers in the Trail Hiker Center. It’s a peaceful and centering time of sung prayers, Scripture, and silence. If you’ve enjoyed singing the Taizé chants before, consider joining us, as we welcome hikers into our community.

On Sunday, July 21st, we’ll continue on with our series This is My Story, This is Our Song by exploring the powerfully moving hymn, Here I Am, Lord. We’ll also be blessed with the musical talents of our very own Bill Goodwin as he sings Amazing Grace–with Glenda Slaughter signing.

Later on Sunday, July 21st, we’ll gather at the Trail Hiker Center to host our third Trail Hiker Meal which starts at 5:30pm and concludes around 7:00pm. This week’s theme is “Italian Feast” with Grace Fellowship cooking up giant cauldrons of spaghetti in a meat sauce. The hiker population in town is about to explode, so if you’re able, please consider bringing a side dish, salad, bread, or dessert to share. And, just wait and see what I’m going to put in the fountain this week… it might be the topping of all toppings. 🙂

Next week, we’ll have our regular offerings–Monday night games at 7:00pm and our Wednesday study this week will focus on the Roman Catholic Church. The study begins at 5:00pm in the Annex.

We’re still looking for a few more shift to be covered in the Trail Hiker Center next week. If you’re able to cover one shift this week, please check out the openings on the schedule on the cork board in Darley Hall.

Seventh Sunday of Ordinary Time

Hey Everyone,

I hope you are all well and enjoying the blessings of our mid-summer weather here in Lake City. We’ve got some new opportunities for learning, service, and worship coming up, so please look over our upcoming schedule for the week ahead.

Tomorrow night, Saturday, July 13th, we’ll launch our first ever Hiker Evening Prayers. Join us at 8:00pm at the Trail Hiker Center for a time of sung prayers, using the Chants of Taizé, Scripture, and Silence. If you’ve never been to a Taizé prayer service, I’d highly recommend joining us tomorrow night.

This Sunday, July 14th, is the Seventh Sunday of Ordinary Time and we’re headed back outside for worship on the lawn. This Sunday is also the start of our Summer Sermon Series: This is My Story, This is Our Song 2The Sequel. That’s right, back by popular demand, this summer we’ll delve into eight popular hymns. This Sunday, we’ll explore the history, story, and theology behind the hymn The Church’s One Foundation.

Then, on Sunday night, July 14th, we’ll host our second hiker meal in the Trail Hiker Center from 5:30pm to 7:00pm. This week’s theme is THANKSGIVING! That’s right, it’s time to break out your favorite thanksgiving recipes for our Thanksgiving in July! I’m already scheming what I might put in the fountain. If you’ve never joined us for a hiker meal, we provide the main protein and everyone else brings a potluck dish in the theme for the night.

With that in mind, we are currently looking for three people to each roast a turkey for the hiker meal this Sunday. If you’re interested and able to roast a 10-15 lbs turkey, please text or call me for future instructions.

And, here’s what’s happening the rest of the week:

On Monday night, July 15th, we’re playing board games at the Presbyterian Annex/Trail Hiker Center from 7:00pm to 8:30pm. All are welcome.

Join us Wednesday night, July 17th, for our weekly Bible study. This summer we’re learning about the various denominations around the world. We’ll start our journey through the Christian traditions with the Orthodox Church. Join us at 5:00pm in the Presbyterian Annex/Trail Hiker Center.

Still looking for a place to serve this summer? Check out the cork board in Darley Hall for a few new opportunities to serve in our community. We’re currently looking for folks for our set-up team and clean-up team for the trail hiker meals. You can sign up for one of the next seven hiker meals or all of them. We’ll also be looking for help cleaning up the chairs and hymnals after the Sunday morning service. For the rest of the summer, we’ll be asking the congregation to leave everything in the yard. We hope this will allow for more time to connect with one another and enjoy a time of fellowship with coffee and cookies.

Finally, we still have a few slots open for trail hiker hosts. If you’re interested in hosting, please check the cork board in Darley Hall. There you will find the open shifts for the upcoming week. And, if you’re curious about hosting, but not entirely sure, I’d invite you to chat with me after the service. It’s really an amazing way to demonstrate God’s love to the thru-hiker communities.

Sorry. One more quick and quirky thing… if any of you have one of those bubbly foot baths you’ve shoved to the back of your closet never to be seen again. We’d love to have a couple at the trail hiker center. If you do have one, please contact me first.

Summer Community Worship Service

Hey Everyone!

I hope you’re all sleeping soundly as I’m writing this. Yes, it’s past midnight on Saturday, but it’s been a crazy week, so you’re getting this quick update in the wee hours of the morning of our Summer Community Worship Service.

That’s right, tomorrow morning (or this morning more likely), Sunday, June 7th we’ll gather with the other churches of Lake City to celebrate our common life together. The service is at the same time (10:00am), but at a different place. So grab your folding chairs (as this is a bring-you-own-chair event) and an umbrella to shade your heads from the morning sun, and join us on the school soccer field across from the medical center. I’m going to attempt to broadcast the service via Zoom tomorrow, but in the past, this hasn’t always been successful, but I’ll do all I can. The link for the service is below.

*Also… if anyone is able to stop by Darley Hall before the 10:00am service and fold 200 bulletins for the service, please text me (and I’ll let you know if the job has been taken). 🙂

And, if our community service wasn’t exciting enough, tomorrow night we’ll also host our first trail hiker meal of the season. Join us in the Trail Hiker Center/Presbyterian Annex at 5:30pm for one of the most magical gatherings of the summer. If you’d like to help set up for the event, please show up at 4:30pm. Don’t forget, we’ll also need some help cleaning up after the event. Our “theme” for tomorrow night’s meal is “Street Tacos,” so break out your favorite Mexican, Tex-Mex, or Southwestern recipe (or anything else you want to bring), and help us celebrate with our first hiker meal.

Finally, a big congratulations to our very own George Assenheimer and Ingrid Long on their engagement this morning (or yesterday morning). We’re excited for you both!

We’ve got a number of things happening this week, so make sure you check out the schedule below:

Monday, July 8: Games Up Here–tabletop games from 7:00 to 8:30pm in the Annex/THC
Wednesday July 10: July Session Meeting at 10:00am in Darley Hall

Second Sunday of Ordinary Time

Hey Everyone,

This Sunday, June 9th is more than just the second Sunday of ordinary time, it’s also our first ever Sign-up Sunday! What is Sign-up Sunday, you ask? It’s that special time of year when I post a bunch of sign-up sheets on the bulletin board in Darley Hall. These sheets represent myriad opportunities to plug into the life of our faith community this summer.

As our ministries have grown each summer, we need more folks to help us serve the community and the trail hikers, as we serve Christ. To that end, take a gander at the cork board in Darley Hall and check out where you can connect.

We need folks for our summer set up team, our welcome team, and our fellowship team. We need readers for Sunday worship and we’d love for some of you to share your musical talents with us. We’ve got lots of opportunities at the hiker center and with the Hearts and Spades Garden project. There are lots of ways to plug in, so take a moment before Sunday and ask the Holy Spirit how you might offer your time and talents for God’s Kingdom this summer.

Likewise, as folks return, our common life is growing a little busier. Please take a moment to look over these announcements for the week ahead:

Service for Pat Stone
The Service in Witness to the Resurrection for Patricia O’Donnell Stone will be held on Saturday, June 15th at 2:00pm in the CPC church yard (weather permitting). A BBQ reception will follow immediately after in the Presbyterian Annex. All are invited to attend.

We’re playing games this week! Join us on Monday, June 10th 7:00pm-8:30pm in the Annex/Trail Hiker Center.

CPC June Session
This Wednesday, June 12th, at 9:00am the CPC elders will gather for our monthly session meeting in Darley Hall.

First Sunday of Ordinal Time

Hey Everyone,

I hope you’re all well and ready for some exciting news… I’m thrilled to announce that our Japanese manual shaved iced machine arrived this week. And, without any exaggeration, it may be the most amazing thing I have ever purchased for a ministry in all of my years. I never knew so much joy could come from a fluffy piece of ice.

This Sunday, after the service during fellowship, I’ll be shaving up some delicious icy treats. This Sunday also marks the beginning of ordinary or ordinal time, when our paraments turn to green for the remainder of the summer. If that wasn’t enough, this Sunday, June 2nd, we’ll also be celebrating communion. If you are joining us via Zoom, don’t forget your bread and juice.

Also, don’t forget that tomorrow evening, Saturday, June 1st at 5:00pm, Bob Downs will be giving his second presentation on his medical mission trip to the Ukraine.

Here are the announcements for this week:
