I hope you are all well and enjoying the autumn weather in your respective neck of the woods. It’s definitely getting colder here in Lake City and we even saw tiny snow-ish flakes this morning.
This Saturday, October 14th at 2:00pm, we’ll all gather at the First Baptist Fellowship Hall for Burton Smith’s Memorial Service. A reception and a time of sharing will follow the service. If you’re unable to be present in person, we’ll be broadcasting the service through Zoom. You can find the Zoom link below.
This Sunday, October 15th we’ll gather for worship at our usual time. This week, I’ll be preaching from the ever-famous passage Psalm 23. If you’d like to read the lectionary texts for the week, you can find them in the online order of worship below.
As many of you know, I’ll be taking some time off this month beginning Monday, October 16th. I’ll return to my duties on Sunday, November 5th. Should any pastoral emergencies surface during this period, I would invite you to text me at (206) 962-9886.
For those wondering about the worship services while I’m on break, soon I’ll be posting an update here and sending an email to those on our weekly email list. In those communications, I’ll provide you with all the order of worship bulletins and information you’ll need to participate in our services while I’m away.
Here are your links to Burton’s Memorial Service and the Sunday Worship service.
I hope you’re all well and settling back into your regular schedules. This Sunday, October 8th we’ll gather together for worship and a time of fellowship. I’ll be preaching on the Ten Commandments found in Exodus 20:1-20. You can read that text and the other lectionary passages in the downloadable online order of worship below.

If you’re in town and want to get some intergenerational exercise, tonight, Friday September 29th, I’ll be hosting Nerf Nation! in the Lake City Armory from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Bring eye protection and a Nerf Rival gun if you have one.

If you are planning on joining us after service for our first-of-the-month potluck, our theme is soup. Break out your favorite soup recipe or bring a side or dessert and join us for a time of fellowship and food after the service.
There aren’t really any announcements this week other than to let you know that although the Lake City Trail Hiker Center is officially closed, there are still hikers in town who are looking for rides to and from the pass.
Finally, as many of you know, our dear brother Burton Smith died last week. For those hoping to attend his memorial service, it will be held in the Baptist Fellowship Hall on October 14th, at 10:00am.
Well, it’s that time of year, when everything calms down and goes back to normal. I don’t know about you, but I am having a mixed feeling of loss, as so many of you are returning home this week (or have already left), and anticipation for season of rest ahead.
This past week, we wrapped up our World Religion Bible Study Class. All the sessions are now available on our YouTube page. There will be no Bible Study until later in October.
This Sunday, September 24, we’ll ease back into our normal rhythms of worship. If you’re interested in the lectionary texts, they are at the end of the online order of worship below.
Here are your announcements for the week:

I hope you’re all warm and dry on this chilly, rainy Friday afternoon. We’ve got a busy couple of days ahead of us, so make sure you look over what happening this week.
For those planning on participating in the bonus Trail Hiker Meal tomorrow evening, Saturday, September 16th, here’s the plan. This meal will function very similar to our normal summer hiker meals, but just with less people. If you are planning on joining us for the meal, please arrive at 5:15pm with a side or dessert to share. There’s no official theme, but we’ll be serving pulled pork tacos. And if you’re going to help set up, please be at the Hiker Center at 4:30pm.
This Sunday, September 17th is our first Scottish Communion Sunday, which will mark our transition indoors and our return to celebrating communion. We’ll have a live bagpiper with us, so break out your plaids (and tartans if you have one), and get to church early, because it’s going to be a full service. If you’re joining us for fellowship, consider making (and bringing) your best Scottish shortbread recipe. Trust me, this is a service you don’t want to miss.
Here are your Announcements for the week ahead:

Bring whatever you want or a dish that reflects one of the religions we’ve studied this summer. The dinner will start around 6:00pm (after we finish our last session of the summer).
Trail Hiker Center Volunteer Dinner If you helped staff the hiker center at anytime during the summer, shuttled hikers, or volunteered at our Trail Hiker Meals, we’d like to invite you to join us for a volunteer dinner on Sunday night, September 24th at 5:30pm. No need to bring anything other than your favorite memory of the summer and any suggestions to help improve the hiker center for next year. Please RSVP to Jason via text or email: lakecityjason@gmail.com
It’s hard to believe that the summer is finally coming to an end. With the wine and music festival just a week away, I wouldn’t be surprised if we started seeing the first aspens turn soon.
This week will definitely be our last Sunday outside for worship. We’ll return to the sanctuary on September 17th with a special Scottish Communion Service, complete with live bagpipes and a special sermon that explores our Scottish Presbyterian roots. Trust me, this will be a service you don’t want to miss.
We’re still in need of cookies for fellowship. Please consider baking a couple dozen cookies and putting them in the refrigerator in Darley Hall.
Finally, a little heads up that are going to host one small hiker meal on Saturday, September 16th at the Trail Hiker Center at 5:30pm. Given that many of our restaurants will be closed that night for the Wine and Music festival, we want to make sure our hikers have a place to eat. We’ll be serving carnitas tacos. I’ll email later this coming week with more details.

This weekend is Labor Day weekend which feels like the beginning of the end of summer. It will likely be our last Sunday outside (we’ll do an informal poll this week), and we’ll be exploring the last century on our tour through the history of the church. It won’t, however, be the end of the series, as I’ll offer some final thoughts and lessons from the history of the church.

I’m disappointed to announce that due to the weather and the road condition challenges, we’re cancelling our gathering at Gold Hill this Saturday afternoon, August 26th. We will, however, be serving tacos out of the Trail Hiker Center/Presbyterian Annex at 6pm this evening if you’d like to swing by for some food and fellowship. Tacos will be served until we run out. Thanks for understanding.
It’s truly hard to believe that this Sunday is the last hiker meal of the season. The summer has felt long, yet has whizzed by faster than expected. That said, we’ve still got a lot going on over the next few weeks, so if you’re still in town, make sure you check out what’s happening below.
For those interested in join us on Gold Hill tomorrow night, Saturday, August 26th, here’s the scoop. Weather permitting, those wishing to caravan and carpool should meet at CPC at 4:30pm. If you’ve never been to Gold Hill, this is a good option. 🙂
The evening meals will kick-off at 5:00pm and continue until 5:45ish. We’ll be a serving street style carnitas tacos and salsa and chips. The meal is provided by CPC and there’s no need to bring anything unless you’d prefer to sit in your own folding chair or something to drink other than water. Please remember that there are no portable toilets at Gold Hill, so please utilized the church’s facilities before coming up. After eating, we’ll gather together to sings a few songs, I’ll share a short meditation and we’ll finish off the night praying for each other. The evening should be over around 6:30pm. If it’s raining, check the church’s website for an update.
This Sunday, August 27th we will continue on with our church history series as we explore one of the most influential periods for the foundation of evangelicalism–the eighteenth century. If you’ve journeyed with us thus far, you’re not going to want to miss this Sunday.
Lastly, here’s the skinning on our last hiker meal. I’ll be making a huge pot of self-awarded winning chili. 🙂 We’d ask those of you participating to bring a side, salad, or dessert that might go well with a bowl of chili. And for those of you who are competitive and would like to challenge my self-awarded winning chili, bring it on. Put together a crock of your challenger chili and we’ll have the hikers present on Sunday cast their votes for the best chili of 2023. If you’re planning on joining in the chili cook-off, please arrive by 5:15pm on Sunday night.

I do want to remind you that we’ll be having our second Being Reformed class in the Annex this Sunday, August 20th. Even if you didn’t make the first session, consider joining us as we look at what it means to be a part of the Reformed tradition.
This Sunday, we’ll also continue on our journey through the history of the church. Join us at 10:00am as we explore what took place between the Reformation and the Enlightenment. We’ll also be singing a few familiar hymns that come from that period.
This coming week, I’ll be teaching the first of a two-part series on Mormonism in our Wednesday Bible Study. In part one, I’ll offer an overview of the religion as I have thus far in our summer series. In part two, however, we’ll be watching the South Park episode on Mormonism, followed by a discussion. We’ve also invited a special guest to share about her experience growing up in the Church of Latter Day Saints.
