Twelfth Sunday of Ordinal Time

Hey Everyone,

I hope you’re all well and ready for some disappointing news. We’ve decided to cancel the Darley Mountain Pilgrimage scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, August 22nd. With the bike race, recent rain, and so many of you out of town, we’re going to postpone the pilgrimage hike to later in the month of September.

But you should SAVE-THE-DATE for our next 150th Anniversary Season of Celebration Event coming next week–a Gospel Concert featuring Lake City’s very own Hunny B’s Rhapsody. Join us on Thursday, August 27th at 7:00pm in the CPC yard (or sanctuary if the weather isn’t cooperating) for this special event.

This Sunday
This coming Sunday August 23rd is the Twelfth Sunday of Ordinal Time. Join us at 10;00am in the CPC sanctuary for our weekly Lord’s Day Worship Service, during which we’ll be exploring the fifth Great End of the Church: The Promotion of Social Righteousness. Fellowship with cookies and coffee will follow!

Trail Hiker Center
Join us Sunday night, August 23rd at 5:30pm at the Trail Hiker Center for our 7th Hiker Dinner of the Season. This Sunday, the cook team will be serving lollipopped fried chicken drumsticks, atop a crispy brown waffle and drizzled with a bacon/butter/syrup reduction. The theme for this week’s meal is “Gastropub/Brunch.” So, go wild. 🙂

We’re still in desperate need for more shuttle drivers, hosts, and laundry angels. Please consider volunteering for this important ministry.

Next Week
This coming week, we’ll be hosting all our regular events. Monday night, August 24th, we’ll join together for Games Up Here in the Annex/Trail Hiker Center from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Wednesday night, August 26th, we’ll continue on with our weekly Bible study series–Stuff Every Christian Should Know. Join us at 5:00pm in the Annex/Trail Hiker Center as we being our journey into the medieval period of church history. And, don’t forget this coming Thursday, August 27th is our 150th Anniversary Gospel Concert at 7:00pm in the yard (or inside).

That’s it for this week folks. Hope to see you all soon. Here are your links for the week ahead.

Eleventh Sunday of Ordinary Time

Hey Folks,

I hope this post finds you all well on this mid-August Saturday evening. The summer is flying by and before we know it, our 150th Anniversary Season of Celebration will be over and our Summer Sermon Series will come to an end. All of this will culminate in our final service of celebration on Sunday, August 30th. Until there there is plenty going on.

Sunday’s Lord’s Day Worship Service
I’m looking forward to seeing many of you at our Lord’s Day Worship Service tomorrow morning, Sunday, August 16th at 10:00am. My gut is that with our recent worship participation and the cooling of the weather, that we’ll be inside the sanctuary tomorrow morning. We’ll just have to wait and see what the morning holds. Fellowship in Darley Hall will commence directly after the worship service. Tomorrow morning we continue on in our series–Six Great Ends of the Church–with the fourth great end: the Preservation of the Truth.

Sixth Trail Hiker Meal
Tomorrow night, Sunday, August 16th is our Sixth Trail Hiker Dinner and tomorrow we’re serving up a dish from my own childhood–SPAM Garlic Fried Rice. That’s right, we’re going to be serving up some chopped up SPAM, with a Filipino garlic fried rice, scrambled eggs, and sweet green peas, all topped with freshly chopped scallions. The theme is Asian, Filipino, Hawaiian, so use your imagination, or make whatever your heart desires. Remember, it’s not about what you bring, but that you’re there to celebration another wonderful evening of ministry and community.

As usual, we still need hosts, shuttle drivers, and laundry angels as the summer crowd shifts and changes. Please consider how you might service the Trail Hiker Center this season.

This Coming Week
This coming week, we have all our regular programming. Monday night, August 17th, we’ll gather for Games Up Here in the Annex/Trail Hiker Center from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Wednesday night, August 19th, we’ll continue on with our weekly Bible study series–Stuff Every Christian Should Know. Join us at 5:00pm in the Annex/Trail Hiker Center.

Darley Mountain Pilgrimage
Our 150th Anniversary Season of Celebration event for next week is a community pilgrimage to Darley Mountain. Join us at 9:00am at CPC to caravan to Engineer Pass. From there we’ll carry on by foot until we summit (or get as far as we get) Darley Mountain. This event is weather contingent and does require the ability to hike for a couple of hours in higher elevations.

For those who didn’t know, Darley Mountain is a 13,260 ft. mountain summit located on the border of Hinsdale County and Ouray County in the Uncompahgre Wilderness. The mountain was officially named after George Marshal Darley, the first minister of the First Presbyterian Church of Lake City in 1992. A lovely painting of Darley Mountain, by our own Mary Wainwright, can be viewed in the library side of Darley Fellowship Hall.

That’s it for this week folks. Hope to see you all soon. Here are your links for the week ahead.

Tenth Sunday of Ordinal Time

Hey Folks,

Happy Wednesday to you all. I’ve got a number of announcements about the upcoming weeks and our gatherings for our 150th Anniversary Season of Celebration. But before we get to that, don’t forget that tonight, Wednesday, August 5th, we’ll gather in the Annex/Trail Hiker Center for our 13th session of Stuff Every Christian Should Know. Join us at 5:00pm tonight as we build the shelving for our exploration into 2,000 years of church history.

Churches of Lake City Prayer Meeting
Tonight, Wednesday, August 5th, the Churches of Lake City are holding an ecumenical prayer meeting at 7:30pm in the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. We’ll be praying for our community and each other during these threatening times.

150th Anniversary Season of Celebration Gatherings
We’ve finally got our dates for all of our 150th anniversary gatherings for the Season of Celebration. Check out below for what’s ahead:

+150th this week! CPC Archive and Artifacts Display: Come check out historic items, documents, old newspapers, and an assortment of other treasured items from the last 150 years of CPC history. The display will be open to all in Darley Fellowship Hall every afternoon from 2:00pm to 5:00pm, starting tomorrow, Thursday, August 6th through Sunday, August 9th.

+150th Next week: Next Thursday, August 13th, we’re gathering in Darley Fellowship Hall for little bit of playful fun. As many of you know, one of George Darley’s first places of ministry was in the gambling tents that offered entertainment to the earliest miners. As the story goes, Darley would take the opportunity to preach to the crowd during their gambling breaks. Join us from 7:00pm to 9:00pm for a night of Blackjack, Poker, Roulette, and the historic game Faro, as we celebrate Darley’s early ministry with a little fun. *(This a free, no charge event and no money will be taken or paid out. We’re just playing for fun! It’s an “fun”-raiser! All participants will receive 50 chips to participate in the evenings activities.)

+150th in the weeks to come…
In the weeks to come, we’ll finally make that pilgrimage to Darley Mountain. Join us on Saturday, August 22nd at 9:00am for our trek. We’ll caravan from CPC to Engineer Pass and then hike to Darley Mountain. This event is weather permitting. Then, in the fourth week of August, we’ll host an outdoor Gospel Concert, featuring the Hunny B’s Rhapsody. Finally, we’ll conclude our 150th Anniversary Season of Celebration with a final celebratory service on Sunday, August 30th.

Sunday Worship
This coming Sunday, August 9th, will be the Tenth Sunday of Ordinal Time. This week, I’ll be teaching on the third end of the Six Great Ends of the Church–the Maintenance of Divine Worship. In keeping, we’ll also be celebrating the Lord’s Supper this coming Sunday in the Lord’s Day Worship Service. If you’re joining us via Zoom, please consider bringing your communion elements to the service. Join us at 10:00am in the CPC yard and on Zoom (links below). A time for fellowship with coffee and cookies will follow the service in Darley Fellowship Hall.

Trail Hiker Center
Thank you for all of your hard work and many hours making our Trail Hiker Center a wonderful and blessed place to dwell. This coming Sunday, August 9th will be our fifth hiker dinner of the season. The theme will be Indian/Asian food and the cook team will be serving up some chicken tikka masala with basmati rice, cilantro, and a special sauce in the fountain. Join us for this special meal. As always, we’re still in need of hosts, drivers, and laundry angels. See the signup sheets on the cork board in Darley Hall.

Game and Stuff
Next week, we’ll carry on with our weekly gatherings. Monday, August 10th, we’ll gather from 7:00pm to 9:00pm for our weekly game night–Games Up Here.

Then on Tuesday, August 11th, the CPC Session will gather from 9:00am to 11:00am for our monthly session meeting.

Finally, on Wednesday, August 12th, we’ll continue with our 13th session of Stuff Every Christian Should Know series. Next week, we’ll be exploring the centuries directly after Christ’s early work (29 CE to 451 CE).

That’s it for this week folks. Hope to see you all soon. Here are your links for the week ahead.
