Summer Community Worship Service

Good evening everyone (or good morning to some of you),

Well, there is no denying it, summer is here and this week felt a little like summer camp. There’s always something do or someone to catch up with. What a blessing it is to have so many of you return.

As most of you know, our Summer Community Worship Service is upon us. Join us tomorrow, Sunday, July 2 at the Soccer field on Henson at 10:00am for this special ecumenical gathering. You can find the link for the service and the order of worship below. And, don’t forget to bring your own chairs and make sure to get there early to grab a spot in the shade.

Please note that we will not be having game night this Monday, due to the town fireworks. But we will be having our fourth session in our world religions series. This Wednesday, July 5 at 5:00pm we’ll explore Hinduism.

And, don’t forget that a week from Sunday on July 9, we’ll be launching our newest Sunday School class before the service and our Sunday evening trail hiker meals will kick off at 5:30pm. More on both of those opportunities in next week’s email.

Third Sunday of Ordinary Time

Hey Everyone,

Guess what!

We’re going outside this Sunday, June 25th for our regularly scheduled 10:00am worship service. If you’ve signed up for worship set up for any week this summer, we’re asking that you show up at 9:00am this Sunday, so we can all our ducks in a row. And, if you didn’t sign up, but would like to serve in this way, please show up at 9:00 in Darley.

If that’s not exciting enough for you, I’m happy to share that we’ll also be starting our summer series on the history of the church. This week, I’ll offer an introduction to the series, covering 2,000 years of church history in only 20 minutes. For those interested in reading the lectionary texts for this week, you’ll still be able to find them in the online downloadable Order of Worship bulletin below.

And as we start our summer series on the History of the Church, we invite you to read over and consider our theme song/hymn for the summer: The Church’s One Foundation.

The Church’s One Foundation
(1) The Church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord;
she is his new creation, by water and the word:
from heaven he came and sought her to be his holy bride;
with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died.

(2) Elect from every nation, yet one o’er all the earth,
her charter of salvation: one Lord, one faith, one birth;
one holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food,
and to one hope she presses with every grace endued.

(3) Though with a scornful wonder we see her sore oppressed,
by schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed:
yet saints their watch are keeping, their cry goes up, “How long?”
and soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song.

(4) ’Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war,
she waits the consummation of peace forevermore,
till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest,
and the great Church victorious shall be the Church at rest.

(5) Yet she on earth hath union with God, the Three in One,
and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won:
O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we,
like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with thee.

Second Sunday of Ordinary Time

Hey Everyone,

Although I typically start my communication with a sentiment of hope that you are all well, I know in fact that many of you are not. Some people have common colds, others are testing positive for COVID, and many remain healthy. Knowing that there are a larger number of folks hit with something, I’ve been in touch with our elders and had several conversations about what to do concerning tomorrow’s worship service. I’m sure many of you are wondering too.

Tomorrow, we WILL be having service in the sanctuary, but I’d like to offer encouragement to folks who have been recently sick, feeling even a little sick, or who are immune compromised, to join us online for our Zoom broadcast (link below). Online participants will have a chance to share any prayer requests they may have as well. Please remember to only share about other’s health conditions publicly with their permission.

As many of you know, I just returned (last night around 11pm) from my Intergenerate conference in Nashville. Given my exposure to a couple hundred people (many from around the world), my extended time in the overcrowded Denver International Airport during my travel delays, and the fact that everyone in my family had some form of sickness this week, I’m going to keep my distance from you all. Consequently, I won’t be lingering after the service. If you need to meet with me for any reason, please email or text me.

Truth be told, all of this has made for quite a challenging decision on behalf of our congregation. I am concerned for you and your health and want to exercise prudence, but also respect your freedom to make the decision to attend or not for yourself. I hope you understand.

If you are joining us tomorrow, Sunday, June 18 for the morning service, we’ll be further exploring the narrative of Abraham, this time with an emphasis on God’s promise of descendants. The Genesis text and the other lectionary texts can be found in the online Order of Worship below.

Also, we are planning to move the service outside on Sunday, June 25. If you’re on the set-up team or are signed up for helping with fellowship, the respective committees will be in contact with you in the week ahead. I will not be starting our lectionary reading Sunday School class (which will take place before the Sunday service) until Sunday July 9th, which is also when our hiker meals will begin. More information to come about both of those summer launches.

Here are your announcements for the week ahead. Keep in mind, although we haven’t cancelled Monday games or our Wednesday Bible study this week, we hope you’ll extend the same health precautions if you attend these gatherings.

Games Up Here
We are having games this Monday, June 19 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm in the Presbyterian Annex. We’ll be playing Jason’s newest design–Lake City Locals.

Wednesday Bible Study
Join us this Wednesday, June 21 from 5:00pm until 6:30pm in the Presbyterian Annex for our second session on World Religion. This week we’ll be looking at Judaism.

Men’s Prayer Breakfast

First Sunday of Ordinary Time

Hey Everyone!

I hope everyone is well and enjoying the sun. Things have definitely picked up in Lake City and it’s great to see so many of you returning. The schedule for this week is going to look a little different, as I will be at the Intergenerate Conference, where I’ll be presenting a paper on my Biblical view of intergenerationality, teaching a workshop on cultivating intergenerational holy moments, and leading a “taste and see” event about the Bible timeline game I’ve been developing this spring with our Intergenerational Study of the Bible for Youth. Consequently, there will be no games or Wednesday Bible study this week.

We had a nice group last night at the first session of our study on world religions. If you missed the class, but would like to tune in, you can find that video and many of our past studies and sermons on our YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oU1WNB1RsV8

This Sunday, June 11, is the first Sunday of Ordinary time. That means we are returning to the color green until next November! This week we’re still meeting in the sanctuary for worship and we’ll also have a special doughnut fellowship time.

I’ll be preaching from the Genesis 12:1-9 passage–the Abrahamic Covenant. Without question, it is one of the most important passages in the Old Testament. Join us in person and on Zoom this Sunday to find out why. You can read that passage and the other lectionary texts in the online order of worship below.

This Sunday is also the Sheriff’s Office Appreciation event that is hosted by all the Lake City churches. Like last years, CPC is providing the doughnuts, 200 to be exact. (It’s a good thing I bought a commercial doughnut maker. ;)) To that end, we’ll be cranking out doughnuts in Darley from 9am until the event. If you’re interested in helping make the doughnuts, glazing them, and package them, please text me at (206) 962-9886.

Here are your announcements for the week ahead:

Sheriff’s Office Appreciation Sunday
Join us Sunday June 11 at 1:00pm in the town park for our ecumenical Sheriff’s Office Appreciation Sunday. Just like last year, CPC is bringing the doughnuts and we’ll be making them for fellowship too. Consider helping us make doughnuts in Darley after Sunday’s fellowship time.

Trinity Sunday

Hey Everyone,

I hope you are all well and keeping warm. It’s really cold here in Lake City and we even had some sleet this morning. Nothing says it’s almost summer like a good pelting with tiny snowballs from God. 😉

Despite the cooler weather, however, we’ll still be meeting tomorrow morning at 9:00am in Darley for our CPC Work Day. Bring your rakes and work gloves and join us for a couple of hours as we tidy up the property.

Yesterday, Thursday, June 1, our Trail Hiker Center officially opened. With the considerable amount of snow still on the mountains, however, we’re not anticipating seeing our first Continental Divide hikers for a couple weeks. Although our hiker meals won’t start until July 9, 2023, there are plenty of ways you can get involved and support this incredible ministry. Sign up Sunday in Darley Hall to serve in the Trail Hiker Center this summer.

This Sunday, June 4 is Trinity Sunday, when we look at the unique nature of our God–three persons in one. To that end, I’ll be making a connection between the creation story found in Genesis 1 and the Great Commission calling found in Matthew 28. You can find all those texts in the online order of worship below.

This Sunday, we’ll also be celebrating the Eucharist, so if you’re joining us online, please remember to bring your own communion elements to the online broadcast. Additionally, please note that there will be NO POTLUCK this Sunday or any Sunday until October. If you’d like to get involved with more fellowship opportunities, please see Linda Downs.

I also wanted to give you some information about Laurel Justice’s son, Calder, who recently was diagnosed with a brain tumor. If you’d like to follow his journey as we hold him in prayer, you can find more information on his CaringBridge page. And, if you’d like to support Laurel as she cares for Calder over the next few months, here’s a link to her Gofundme page.

Finally, last week we had a wonderful reception and fellowship time after the Sunday morning worship service to celebrate the LEGO creations made by the Intergenerational Study of the Bible for Youth class. There are a few photos at the bottom of this post highlighting the event.

Here are your announcements for the week:

Pentecost Sunday

Hey Everyone,

I hope you are all well and enjoying the warmer days that are upon us. The plants started budding this week in Lake City and everything is looking greener. It’s that exciting time of year when summer folks start returning. We’re praying for your safe travels.

This Sunday, May 28, we’ll be celebrating Pentecost–the arrival of the Holy Spirit in the book of Acts (don’t forget to wear something red). During the service this week, we’ll be exploring three lectionary passages that shed light on why the advent of the Holy Spirit is so significant for us today. You can read all three texts in the online downloadable Order of Worship below.

This Sunday, after the service we’ll also be having a special fellowship time in the Annex, where the participants from our Intergenerational Study of the Bible for Youth class will display their LEGO creations depicting the stories of the Old Testament. From the creation narrative to the Israelite’s exile in Babylon, you’ll see some of your favorite Old Testament stories like you’ve never seen them before. But wait… there’s more. We’ll also have a prototype of the timeline game that we’ve been playing this spring, and you can even play a game. Join us after Sunday’s service for this special fellowship open house.
