Hey Everyone!

I hope everyone is well and ready for Thanksgiving. This holiday season, we’ve got a few changes in our weekly schedule. Please take note in the Announcements below what is happening this week and what has been cancelled.

Beyond the programmatic announcements, I’d also like to draw your attention to a couple of additional pieces of information. Please consider making a couple dozen cookies and putting them in a ziplock bag and dropping them off in the freezer in Darley Hall.

Next, we want to make sure that everyone in our faith community has a place to go for Thanksgiving. If you don’t have plans for the holiday, I’d like you to call me or text me at (206) 962-9886, and let me know. And, if you’re willing to welcome someone in your home for a thanksgiving meal, please call or text me at the same number. We want to make sure that everyone has a place to go this holiday season.

This Sunday, we’ll be exploring the parable of the talents from Matthew. You can find the gospel text, the other lectionary readings, and the online order of worship below.

The Next Three Weeks

Hey Everyone,

I hope this email finds you all well. This will be my last post for a few weeks as I begin a three-week break staring tomorrow, Monday, October 16th. I’ll return to worship on Sunday, November 5th.

Next week, Sunday, October 22nd, you all will be led by our ruling elders as CPC joins in a service of song and scripture. Then, on Sunday, October 29th, the Stated Clerk of the Presbytery of Western Colorado, Rev. Keri Shelton will lead you in worship and will be our guest preacher for the week.

All of the downloadable weekly Order of Worship bulletins can be found below. Each bulletin contain the lectionary readings for that week. If you’re attending online, you can find that link below as well.

If you’re joining us for the November 5th service, please remember that we’ll both be celebrating communion that week and having our monthly first-of-the-month potluck.
In November, the theme for the potluck is Thanksgiving!

Just a reminder, this is more of a “Staycation” for me and my family. Although I will be traveling to fetch my mother from Columbus later in the month, I’ll only be gone a few days. While I don’t intend on engaging in the day-to-day routine of my pastoral duties, please know that if you have a pastoral emergency, I am available. To reach me, please text me.

While there isn’t any official announcements, I wanted you to be aware that we’re starting a new book study after I return on the 5th of November. You can read about that below.

On the Brink of Everything: Grace, Gravity, & Getting Old
Join us this autumn for our weekly Bible study, which returns on Wednesday, November 8th at 5:00pm in Darley Hall. For seven weeks, we’ll delve into Parker Palmer’s book, On the Brink of Everything. In all my years of study, Palmer stands out as one of the most profound and thoughtful writers I’ve ever studied. In his tenth and final book, this seasoned octogenarian reflects on what it means to age. The book can be found on all major online retail outlets for $13.00 or less in hardback format. Please note in the schedule below the shifting of the weekly meeting date on November 21st (for Thanksgiving) and December 7th (for St. Nicholas Day).

On the Brink of Everything Schedule
Week 1–(November 8th): Prelude & Chapter 1: The View from the Brink
Week 2–(November 15th): Young & Old: The Dance of the Generations
Week 3–(*November 21st): Getting Real: From Illusion to Reality
Week 4–(November 29th): Work & Vocation: Writing a Life
Week 5–(*December 7th): Keep Reaching Out: Staying Engaged with the World
Week 6–(December 13th): Keep Reaching In: Staying Engaged with Your Soul
Week 7–(December 20th): Over the Edge: Where We Go When We Die

Nineteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Hey Everyone,

I hope you are all well and enjoying the autumn weather in your respective neck of the woods. It’s definitely getting colder here in Lake City and we even saw tiny snow-ish flakes this morning.

This Saturday, October 14th at 2:00pm, we’ll all gather at the First Baptist Fellowship Hall for Burton Smith’s Memorial Service. A reception and a time of sharing will follow the service. If you’re unable to be present in person, we’ll be broadcasting the service through Zoom. You can find the Zoom link below.

This Sunday, October 15th we’ll gather for worship at our usual time. This week, I’ll be preaching from the ever-famous passage Psalm 23. If you’d like to read the lectionary texts for the week, you can find them in the online order of worship below.

As many of you know, I’ll be taking some time off this month beginning Monday, October 16th. I’ll return to my duties on Sunday, November 5th. Should any pastoral emergencies surface during this period, I would invite you to text me at (206) 962-9886.

For those wondering about the worship services while I’m on break, soon I’ll be posting an update here and sending an email to those on our weekly email list. In those communications, I’ll provide you with all the order of worship bulletins and information you’ll need to participate in our services while I’m away.

Seventeenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Hey Everyone!

I hope this short post finds you all well and basking in the glory of God’s creation. I don’t know about you, but I can’t get enough of the beauty the changing of the aspens brings to Lake City.

If you’re in town and want to get some intergenerational exercise, tonight, Friday September 29th, I’ll be hosting Nerf Nation! in the Lake City Armory from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Bring eye protection and a Nerf Rival gun if you have one.

It’s the first Sunday of October and the first Sunday of the month which means we’re both celebrating communion and having our first potluck of the autumn. If you’re joining us online, please remember to bring your communion elements with you to the broadcast.

If you are planning on joining us after service for our first-of-the-month potluck, our theme is soup. Break out your favorite soup recipe or bring a side or dessert and join us for a time of fellowship and food after the service.

There aren’t really any announcements this week other than to let you know that although the Lake City Trail Hiker Center is officially closed, there are still hikers in town who are looking for rides to and from the pass.

Finally, as many of you know, our dear brother Burton Smith died last week. For those hoping to attend his memorial service, it will be held in the Baptist Fellowship Hall on October 14th, at 10:00am.

Sixteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Hey Everyone,

Well, it’s that time of year, when everything calms down and goes back to normal. I don’t know about you, but I am having a mixed feeling of loss, as so many of you are returning home this week (or have already left), and anticipation for season of rest ahead.

This past week, we wrapped up our World Religion Bible Study Class. All the sessions are now available on our YouTube page. There will be no Bible Study until later in October.

This Sunday, September 24, we’ll ease back into our normal rhythms of worship. If you’re interested in the lectionary texts, they are at the end of the online order of worship below.

Here are your announcements for the week:

Trail Hiker Center
For the last week of the month (starting Monday, September 25th), we need help in two areas: 1) covering the 11am-1pm shift at the hiker center and 2) shuttle hikers to and from Spring Creek Pass at noon.

Games Up Here
Join us for games this Monday, September 25th at 7:00pm in the Presbyterian Annex!

Wednesday Bible Study

Scottish Communion Sunday

Hey Everyone,

I hope you’re all warm and dry on this chilly, rainy Friday afternoon. We’ve got a busy couple of days ahead of us, so make sure you look over what happening this week.

For those planning on participating in the bonus Trail Hiker Meal tomorrow evening, Saturday, September 16th, here’s the plan. This meal will function very similar to our normal summer hiker meals, but just with less people. If you are planning on joining us for the meal, please arrive at 5:15pm with a side or dessert to share. There’s no official theme, but we’ll be serving pulled pork tacos. And if you’re going to help set up, please be at the Hiker Center at 4:30pm.

This Sunday, September 17th is our first Scottish Communion Sunday, which will mark our transition indoors and our return to celebrating communion. We’ll have a live bagpiper with us, so break out your plaids (and tartans if you have one), and get to church early, because it’s going to be a full service. If you’re joining us for fellowship, consider making (and bringing) your best Scottish shortbread recipe. Trust me, this is a service you don’t want to miss.

Here are your Announcements for the week ahead:

Trail Hiker Center
We’re maintaining our staffing schedule for another week at the Trail Hiker Center. If you’re unable to cover your shift, please let Jason know. Also, if you’re available to help with the noon shuttle run on Sundays or Mondays, please contact Jason.

Games Up Here
Join us for games this Monday, September 18th at 7:00pm in the Presbyterian Annex!

Wednesday Bible Study
Join us this Wednesday, September 20th from 5:00pm until 6:30pm in the Presbyterian Annex for our 13th and FINAL session on world religion. This week we’ll be looking at Scientology AND having a wrap up during our Summer’s End Bible Study Potluck. Bring whatever you want or a dish that reflects one of the religions we’ve studied this summer. The dinner will start around 6:00pm (after we finish our last session of the summer).

Trail Hiker Center Volunteer Dinner
If you helped staff the hiker center at anytime during the summer, shuttled hikers, or volunteered at our Trail Hiker Meals, we’d like to invite you to join us for a volunteer dinner on Sunday night, September 24th at 5:30pm. No need to bring anything other than your favorite memory of the summer and any suggestions to help improve the hiker center for next year. Please RSVP to Jason via text or email: lakecityjason@gmail.com

Fourteenth Sunday after Ordinary Time

Hey Everyone!

It’s hard to believe that the summer is finally coming to an end. With the wine and music festival just a week away, I wouldn’t be surprised if we started seeing the first aspens turn soon.

This week will definitely be our last Sunday outside for worship. We’ll return to the sanctuary on September 17th with a special Scottish Communion Service, complete with live bagpipes and a special sermon that explores our Scottish Presbyterian roots. Trust me, this will be a service you don’t want to miss.

We’re still in need of cookies for fellowship. Please consider baking a couple dozen cookies and putting them in the refrigerator in Darley Hall.

Finally, a little heads up that are going to host one small hiker meal on Saturday, September 16th at the Trail Hiker Center at 5:30pm. Given that many of our restaurants will be closed that night for the Wine and Music festival, we want to make sure our hikers have a place to eat. We’ll be serving carnitas tacos. I’ll email later this coming week with more details.

Here are your Announcements for this week:

Trail Hiker Center
We’ve got hikers pouring into Lake City and need to maintain the shifts from the summer. If you’re unable to cover your previously scheduled shifts, please let Jason know.

Games Up Here
Join us for games this Monday, September 11th at 7:00pm in the Presbyterian Annex!

September Session
The CPC Session will meet this Wednesday, September 13th from 10:00am to 12:00pm in Darley Hall

Wednesday Bible Study
Join us this Wednesday, September 13th from 5:00pm until 6:30pm in the Presbyterian Annex for our Twelfth session on world religion. This week we’ll continue with our exploration of cults by looking at the Christian Science religion and discover what’s up with those reading rooms. 🙂
